Vendors Turn RTX 3070 Ti Mobile Into Bogus Desktop GPUs
A small manufacturer of graphics cards is selling a so-called “GeForce RTX 3070 TiM” graphics card that barely delivers the performance of a desktop GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. This board is actually based on his GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics processor from Nvidia for laptops configured accordingly and has nothing to do with his GeForce RTX 3070 Ti for desktops. Unfortunately, even though the manufacturer discloses the specifications of their products, they still have pretty misleading model numbers, so they don’t appear on our list of the best graphics cards.
51Risc GeForce RTX 3070 TiM graphics card with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, ali express (opens in new tab) (and noticed video cards (opens in new tab)) disguises itself as a GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. This is because very few people see the M moniker after Ti. The board, on the other hand, is powered by his GA104 (GN20-E) silicon from Nvidia, which is used for its laptop-bound GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, and is considerably slower than its desktop-bound sibling. .
Nvidia’s desktop GeForce RTX 3070 Ti uses the company’s full-fledged GA104-400 GPU, with 6,144 CUDA cores and a 1,770 MHz boost clock combined with 8 GB of 19 GTps GDDR6X memory. In contrast, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti laptop version features a GPU with 5,888 CUDA cores and a boost clock of up to 1,485 MHz coupled with 8 GB of 14 GTps GDDR6 memory. The 51Risc GeForce RTX 3070 TiM, on the other hand, features a GPU with 5888 CUDA cores running at up to 1410MHz and features 8GB of 17.5 GTps GDDR6 memory.
CUDA core | clock | FP32 performance | memory | TDP | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
GeForce RTX 3060 Ti | 4864 | 1410-1665MHz | 16.2 TFLOPS | 8GB, 14GT/s GDDR6 | 200W |
GeForce RTX 3070 | 5888 | 1500-1725MHz | 20.3 TFLOPS | 8GB, 14GT/s GDDR6 | 220W |
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti | 6144 | 1580-1770MHz | 21.7TFLOPS | 8GB, 19GT/s GDDR6X | 290W |
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti laptop | 5888 | 510-1485MHz | 14.6TFLOPS | 8GB, 14GT/s GDDR6 | 125W |
GeForce RTX 3070 TiM | 5888 | 915-1410MHz | 16.6TFLOPS | 8GB, 17.5GT GDDR6 | 220W |
Given the GeForce RTX 3070 TiM’s clocks, it should offer similar performance to the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti in most cases, and will never reach the framerates offered by the GeForce RTX 3070. Still, 17.5 GTps memory beats both for applications that demand high memory bandwidth.
Meanwhile, the RTX 3070 TiM is also relatively affordable. $337 (opens in new tab) Cheapest GeForce RTX 3070 with free shipping from China to USA ($530 (opens in new tab)) but the most affordable GeForce RTX 3060 Ti ($389 (opens in new tab)) board on Amazon.
The 51Risc GeForce RTX 3070 TiM looks like all cheap gaming graphics cards these days. This is a reasonably compact dual wide product with a dual fan cooling system, one 8-pin auxiliary PCIe power connector and four display outputs. The only sticker on the backplate says that this is an “RTX3070TI 8G DDR6” device. The board rocks a 220W TDP that matches his GeForce RTX 3070 on desktop. The GeForce RTX 3070 TiM, on the other hand, needs drivers for laptop GPUs.
Counterfeit processors and graphics cards are now less common than they were 20 years ago, at least in the developed world. However, a surge in global trade has opened the doors for forged hardware from stores in Asia to the United States and Europe. 51Risc never makes fake hardware because they properly disclose their specs and even mention what silicon they’re working with. However, the rather bogus naming seems quite misleading and can mislead consumers who are unaware of the various GPU characteristics.
