YouTuber Tricks ChatGPT Into Generating Windows 95 Keys

A YouTuber has published a video of tricking ChatGPT into generating a usable Windows 95 activation key. When I asked Open AI’s chatbot directly for a Windows 95 key, it was denied for the expected reasons.youtuber Ender Man Then I asked the same thing from a different angle. The results were successful, but somewhat limited by ChatGPT’s ability to process natural language requests in a formulaic manner.

When initially refusing to generate a Windows 95 key, ChatGPT explained that it was unable to perform the task and suggested that investigators consider a newer supported version of Windows.

It’s been known for some time that it’s relatively easy to generate a working Windows 95 key, so this ChatGPT exercise was definitely just for fun. The Windows 95 OEM key format is outlined above, but the Windows 95 retail key is shorter and simpler.

So to avoid ChatGPT’s principled refusal to generate software keys, Enderman worded the formula. The first attempt didn’t work and I got an error. However, with a few tweaks to the query structure, it seemed to work.

Some of the test results were confirmed by activating a fresh installation of Windows 95 in a virtual machine. The keys passed a brief inspection, but it turned out that he had only about 1 in 30 keys that seemed to work as expected.
