YouTuber Uses Dental Floss To Delid Ryzen 7000

A Korean YouTuber has shared a quick and clever way to unplug one of AMD’s latest and greatest Zen 4 desktop CPUs. Tassi Ham has released a short short video showing how to quickly remove the AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) using only a small piece of dental floss and a household iron.

Before trying this dental floss removal technique on your precious new Ryzen 7000 series CPU, there are certain techniques you should be aware of. An important step in using floss to remove AMD’s IHS is to thread the thread of floss behind the “octopus” leg (the tab that secures the IHS to his CPU) and pull the loop slowly and firmly. Pull it forward to separate it from the CPU. Continuing this for each of the eight legs will complete one of two steps.

Watching Tassi Ham complete this octopus leg removal process isn’t nearly as nerve-wracking as a typical demolition video with sharp metal tools. The slim, possibly waxed (mint is my favorite) threads don’t threaten the delicate exposed surface mount electronics near the fixation points on the octopus legs. While working on slicing the fixing glue, the process seems smooth and doesn’t seem to require a lot of effort to be successful.

Step 2 uses another regular household device: an iron. Make a stand with the iron surface facing up, add a small blob of thermal paste to the CPU IHS (IHS side down) and place it on the hot surface. iron. After just ’30 seconds’ the IHS is ready to be removed with little effort. In the video, Tassi Ham used some spaghetti his tongs, but most tongs or soft (plastic, wood) grip tweezers are probably suitable for this. Sadly, Tassi Ham messed around with this part and dropped his detached CPU on the desk, apparently without harm.

It’s inspiring to see YouTubers who champion the true spirit of computer DIY and use the amazing “tools” everyone might have around their home for delicate electronic processes. You canIn some ways it reminds me of overclocking pencil trick From the beginning of the millennium. Finally, the “dental floss” method makes custom CNC tools for Ryzen 7000 molting (like this one from Der8auer) look a little overengineered.
