5th Gen EPYC “Turin” Announced, Coming by End of 2024

As part of AMD’s Financial Analyst Day 2022, AMD provided an update to its server CPU roadmap for 2024. The biggest announcement is that AMD is already planning a 5th generation EPYC, the (next generation) core of AMD’s successful EPYC family. The series and codename Turin are assigned. Some important announcements include various segmentations of the expected EPYC7004 portfolio, including Genoa, Bergamo, Genoa-X, and Siena.

From the launch of AMD’s EPYC 2nd generation product codenamed Rome in August 2019, the release of an updated EPYC 7003 processor that includes both Milan and Milan-X, the next generation EPYC 7004 codenamed Genoa Will be available in the fourth quarter of 2022. Featuring up to 96 Zen4 cores based on TSMC’s 5nm process nodes, the new SP5 platform provides 12-channel memory, PCIe 5.0 support, and memory expansion support with Compute Express Link (CXL).

Genoa will benefit from up to 96 Zen4 cores and will be released in the fourth quarter towards the end of the year, while AMD also announced Bergamo. It will be available in the first half of 2023, and Genoa-X and Siena will be available someday. AMD’s Genoa-X has up to 96 Zen4 cores based on TSMC’s 5nm manufacturing node and has up to 1GB of L3 cache per socket. Targeted primarily as a low-cost platform, AMD Siena features up to 64 Zen 4 cores with optimized performance per watt, making it more affordable in the Edge and Telco markets.

AMD announces 5th generation EPYC (Turin)

Perhaps the most important announcement about AMD’s server CPU roadmap entering 2024 is to bring the 5th generation EPYC processor with the codename “Turin” to market by the end of 2024. As expected, AMD hasn’t revealed much detail about Turin. Although it is a family of processors, we expect it to be named the EPYC 7005 platform according to the current EPYC naming scheme.

As highlighted in AMD’s CPU core roadmap up to 2024, Zen5 cores have been found to be based on 4nm mode (probably TSMC but not confirmed) and 3nm version. AMD also states that Zen has three variations. 5 cores of the CPU roadmap. This includes Zen 5, Zen 5 with 3D V-Cache, and Zen 5c.

The latest roadmap focused on AMD’s EPYC products shows that AMD’s 5th generation EPYC processors will be available by the end of 2024.
