Wuxn WXR Review: User Friendly, High Quality
Wuxn’s WXR is a premium 3D printer designed and built in Fort Collins, Colorado. Like the Prusa and LulzBot, Wuxn printers are built with quality precision and ease of use in mind. The WXR arrives fully assembled with a series of onboard wizards to guide you through calibration and your first print.
With a retail price of $999, the WXR’s price is comparable to a fully built one. Pulsa MK3S+which is on our list best 3d printer, but it lacks the pedigree of the little orange machines that brought 3D printing to the masses. Wuxn is running referrals NARS RULES! SALE Through February, the price drops to $799.
In a world obsessed with speed, can a new printer carve a niche based solely on high-quality single-color printing?

A USB flash disk contains the test model and the Wuxn software and full manual can be downloaded from the website. A paper quick start guide provides instructions to get your printer up and running.
Wuxn WXR design
The Wuxn WXR is an open source i3 style cartesian printer with cyberpunk flare as seen on the custom double sided BuildTak flex plate. The machine is primarily made of gray extrusions, with linear rails on the Y and X gantry, and wheels on the Z axis. Some parts are 3D printed, such as the screen case and the filament-out sensor. The exposed tool head gives it an industrial look while also letting you check out the Slice Engineering hotend.
This is not your typical bed-slinger. The machine comes with some premium his parts, such as dual Z-axes and a linear rail that provides precision movement without the need to adjust the tightness of hidden eccentric nuts. One for hotend and two for component cooling. The Slice Engineering Copperhead hotend has an all-metal heatbreak to avoid jams and make handling hot filament easier. And since the hotend is from an established company, replacement V6 nozzles are easy to find.
It features a unique 3D printed spool holder that supports the spool on smooth rolling bearings for frictionless feeding.
The WXR is one of the quietest printers I’ve tested. Unlike most printers, all fans are turned off during standby, making it completely silent. When printing, it checks in at less than 55 decibels, about the same as the Ender 3 S1 Pro. This is considered the same noise level as quiet conversation.
Ease of use was taken into consideration not only at the opening stage, but also at every stage. For example, extruders do not have levers. This is because it has an autoload feature that senses when filament is inserted and retracts it. Enter the amount and then ask if the color is still changed. If the answer is no, it goes further. If the answer is yes, you will be asked if you would like to keep the heater on.
Another, perhaps trivial, thing is that files load more smoothly. Plug a full-size SD card into the machine and it will automatically suggest printing the latest file. This eliminates the need to scroll through menus to find files.
One perk the WRX lacks is built-in Wi-Fi. FLSun V400 and the Bamboo Lab P1P.
Assembling the Wuxn WXR
The Wuxn WXR ships fully assembled and requires only unpacking. Simply clip on the various zip ties, remove the screw-on packing clamps, and snap on the spool holders.
Every WXR undergoes a thorough inspection before shipping. This is evident in the two checklists inside the box. One is a packing list, signed and dated with the serial number of the machine. The other is a quality assurance test, signed and dated, showing that a test print was performed at the factory.
Unlike most other printers, the WXR runs an out-of-the-box calibration wizard when first turned on. This performance cannot be avoided. Turn on the fan, ask if you can feel it, adjust the Z axis, and run across the bed level. Then guide the filament load and run the calibration cube.
Wuxn WXR Leveling
The Wuxn WXR uses inductive probes to sense the surface of the bed. When you turn it on for the first time, it runs a full calibration program to ensure a perfect first print. The bed is securely attached to the rails so it should be able to maintain that level for weeks of printing. You should always recheck the level after moving the printer or during regular maintenance.
To level the bed after setup, go to the Wizards menu (purple pointy hat) and tap. It runs a 49 point mesh bed level. The Z height was calibrated at the factory and was fine on our test unit. However, if you need to test the Z-height, use the “First Layer” wizard and print the zigzag lines for approval. No paper tongs required.
Loading filament into Wuxn WXR
If you want to change the filament, tap Load/Unload in the menu. It will ask you what type of filament you are using, set the proper temperature, and let you automatically unload the current filament. A screen will appear asking you to confirm when the filament has been removed.
Press Load/Unload again, check the filament type, and then insert a few millimeters of filament into the top hole of the extruder. WXR senses new filament and retracts automatically. The screen will ask if the color is still changing. Press No to load more. Press Yes to exit the routine.
File/software preparation for Wuxn WXR
Wuxn Slicer can be downloaded for free from the company’s website. This is a customized copy of his Cura with his 3 profiles (fast, goto, strong) for WXR and tuned filament profiles for PLA, ABS, ASA, PETG and TPU.
The adjusted profiles will ensure excellent printing, but if you’re already running Cura on another machine, you may be annoyed that you need another slicer. It works with Cura, but since the printer is very new, you need to create your own profile. After bumping the build height to 250, I had good results using Cura’s Prusa MK3S+ profile.
Note that more and more manufacturers are opting for custom slicers tailored to their specific product. Adding printers to the Cura lineup takes time. And it’s much easier to tell a customer to download a new slicer than explain her Cura changes.
Printing with Wuxn WXR
Wuxn WXR comes with a full roll of Wuxn PLA. ours was red. If you want more exciting materials like silk or multicolored filaments, check out our guide. Best filament for 3D printing for suggestions.
WXR printed a calibration cube as part of the unboxing routine. This worked very well and was within expected tolerances.
I ran some test prints, one of which was the classic Torture Toaster. I printed this on the Wuxn Slicer in ‘Fast’ mode with a layer height of 0.25, an infill of 20%, and a speed of 75mm/s, using the supplied red. Wuxn PLAIt took 9 hours and 43 minutes, making it one of the best toasters I’ve run on the stock machine. All the gears were moving, the toast was popping, and the string was just a line surrounding the toast.
I wanted to print something fairly large and detailed, so I turned to Wexter and his free Witcher Bust piggy bank…Allows you to toss a coin to a witcherThis is a very detailed model and I decided to put just a little bit of support under the chin.
In hindsight, it’s possible that Geralt’s bust needed a little more support at the bottom, as the straps show some layer lines. printed. It is for daily printing, layer height is 0.2mm, fill factor is 15% and speed is 50mm/s. I used Pursamint Galaxy Silver.
At PETG, we create complex vases Greengate Recycled Purple Reign Transition SpoolThe Transition Spool is an inexpensive way to try out the company’s filament. This is because of the strange rolls produced during tarnishing. This is why my vase is more gray than purple. BuildTak plates require a layer of adhesive to prevent the PETG from sticking too hard to the surface and damaging the print or plate when removed.
For this print, I used the ‘Hard’ mode with a layer height of 0.16 mm, a line width of 0.45 mm and a speed of 50 mm/s. We also used Wuxn’s default settings for PETG. This automatically raised the temperature to 245C and the fan to 50%.
I got my favorite Vase Mode print, the Taco Bell Bag, for my TPU run. It was printed at full size using ‘goto’ and default TPU settings. It took 8 hours and 16 minutes to print Inland Blue TPU (opens in new tab) No stringing.
Conclusion
The Wuxn WXR is a fun machine to use, but you’ll pay extra for American assembly costs on top of quality parts from a variety of name brand manufacturers. , a number of wizards to guide you through your 3D printing journey.
With a retail price of $999 and currently selling for $799, the WXR isn’t your typical bed slinger, nor is it for every budget. But you get a working machine out of the box with no upgrades required. It features a wear-free precision linear rail, dual lead screws and a premium hotend. Leveling the bed is easy and the BuildTak flex plate provides a firm stickiness so the print is not difficult to remove.
But if you want to save a little money while still getting the benefits of automatic bed leveling and an easy-to-remove build plate. Elegoo Neptune 3 Pro, currently priced at $230.
