A verdict in the Bill Cosby civil trial has been reached. Here’s what to know.

A jury has ruled in a civil lawsuit filed by a California woman accusing Bill Cosby of having sexually assaulted her as a teenager, the court said Tuesday.

The jury began submitting to court at 3:30 pm Pacific time or just before 6:30 pm Eastern Standard Time. Judge Craig D. Carlan entered the room.

Judy Hughes, a woman, filed a lawsuit in a civil court in Los Angeles, alleging that Cosby had sexually assaulted the Playboy Mansion at the age of 16 in 1975.

The jury started deliberations on Thursday morning.

Some of the many other women who accused Cosby of sexual assault, partly because it was the first civil case to accuse him of sexual assault, watched Hughes carefully.

During a 10-day testimony at the Santa Monica branch of the Los Angeles High Court, the jury heard Mr. Hughes’ explanation that she and her friend met Mr. Cosby in a park in San Marino, California. She made the movie “Let’s Do It Again”.

She and her friend Donna Samuelson testified that Mr. Cosby invited them to his tennis club and then to his house. In occasional emotional testimony from her stand, Mr. Hughes, 64, explained in her bedroom in her mansion how a famous man she admired forced her to have sexual intercourse.

Cosby, 84, denied the claim. His lawyer admitted that he had met Mr. Hughes at the Playboy Mansion, but in her active cross-examination, described her account as a “complete and complete fabrication.” money.

They explained to herself why she stayed in the Playboy Mansion for hours from what she allegedly encountered, swam in the pool, ordered a cocktail, and for the months and years that followed. Asked why he didn’t talk about.

Huth filed her proceedings in 2014 when many other women were publicly in front of allegations of similar misconduct against Cosby.

Under California law, she claims that the period of reporting assault is a victim of childhood sexual abuse, but she can file a proceeding because it can be extended for adults who have suppressed the experience. I did. In 2020, California law was amended to further extend the statute of limitations for allegations of sexual assault in civil courts.

The proceedings were largely pending while Mr. Cosby was being charged with criminal charges in another case. In Pennsylvania, Andrea Constand, a former employee of Temple University, was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting him.

The 2018 criminal conviction in the Constant case was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court last year.

Mr Cosby exercised his fifth amendment against his self-incrimination and did not testify in court. In a video testimony taken in 2015, Cosby denied sexual contact with Hughes. He didn’t know her, didn’t remember taking her to the Playboy Mansion, and wouldn’t recognize her, he said.
