Alex Newell Earns First Tony Nomination For Their Role in ‘Shucked’

How similar are you to your character?

In the very sense that this woman has built her own career and livelihood. I’m not saying I did everything on my own without any help, but I’m making life decisions and moving cross-country on my own. When I sing “Owned,” it’s like my own anthem, talking about what I’ve done for myself.

You are non-binary and the Tony Awards use gender categories. Why did you choose Best Actor?

I see the word ‘actor’ as one that is my profession and two that are genderless. A plumber is not called a plumber. I don’t call the janitor a janitor. A plumber, a janitor. That’s how I see words and that’s how I chose my categories.

Have you seen the other nominated shows?

I’m so happy that my friend J. Harrison was nominated for “Some Like It Hot”. I haven’t seen ‘Kimberly Akimbo’ yet, but I’m super excited that my best friend Bonnie Milligan has been nominated.

If you could have anyone in the audience for your performance, who would you choose?

Beyoncé.

What is your dream role?

I’m still aiming for Effie from “Dreamgirls”.

Last question. Do you like corn?

My publicist says I’m not allowed to say that, but I hate corn. I get it from Chipotle, Glass House Tavern has this lovely corn couscous dish.
