AMD Radeon RX 580 Nearly Doubles Minecraft Performance With New Driver
AMD’s latest Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 driver launched yesterday and is claimed to improve OpenGL performance by up to 92%. AMD has achieved impressive numbers with its updated Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. (Mileage will vary on other less powerful Radeon graphics cards.)
YouTuber 54FPS (opens in new tab) tested the Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 driver on the renowned Radeon RX 580. Mine Craft, and the results were nothing short of spectacular. It’s important to note that this is vanilla Mine Craft Not the Microsoft Store version with ray tracing. The driver has no effect on the latter.
In our initial tests, the Radeon RX 580 delivered an average framerate of 302 FPS, just 1% off 71 FPS with the previous Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 driver. With the new driver, the Polaris-powered graphics card pushed average framerates up to 547 FPS, down to as low as 1% of 32 FPS. That translates to a whopping 81% increase in average framerate!
The Radeon RX 580 finished the second test with an average framerate of 254 FPS, just 1% of 60 FPS with the older driver. The Adrenalin Edition 22.6.1 driver managed an average framerate of 454 FPS and just 1% of 61 FPS. Performance improved by 79%.
OpenGL’s performance improvements aren’t strictly limited to games. Synthetic benchmarks leveraging OpenGL, such as Unigine Heaven, also benefit from the Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 driver. YouTuber Carrie Golomb (opens in new tab) We tested Unigine Heaven on AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800U mobile APU with a Radeon 680M iGPU. At 10W, the APU scored 12% higher. Performance improvement is proportional to power limit. Increasing the TDP to 15W and 20W increased the scores by 19% and 21% respectively.
Emulation fans will also be pleased with the Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 drivers. Golomb Benchmark (opens in new tab) It doubled the performance on Ryujinx, a Nintendo Switch emulator.
