AMD’s 64-Core Zen 3 Threadripper CPU Sets Cinebench R23 World Record at 5.2 GHz
as you tweeted HXL, (opens in new tab) Overclocker TSAIK set a Cinebench R23 world record with a Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX overclocked to 5.15 GHz in liquid nitrogen. The Threadripper system scored a staggering score 11,6142 points (opens in new tab)using 5.23 GHz on the 64-core Ryzen Threadripper 3990X, 10% higher than previous world record holder Splave.
Without a doubt, the new world record score is a testament to AMD’s IPC improvements seen in the Zen 3 architecture. This includes an integrated L3 cache across each CCD, as well as enhancements to the core itself, resulting in a 19% IPC improvement over the previous generation Zen. 2 architecture that the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X uses from Splave’s last world record results.
The Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000 WX series is AMD’s new generation of workstation processors. These chips have the same core configs as their predecessors but, as mentioned, feature AMD’s new Zen 3 architecture which features slightly higher clock speeds. According to previous tests done by Puget Systems, these chips could be up to 20% faster than his Threadripper 3000 chip depending on the application.
But best of all, AMD has left its Ryzen Threadripper workstation processors completely unlocked for overclocking. This is a very unusual move in the industry given that the platform caters to professionals first and foremost, so thanks to AMD’s decision TSAIK will be able to beat his Cinebench R23 record holder is ready.
To achieve the world record, TSAIK used an MSI WS WRX80 motherboard with 128 GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM in all 8 DIMM slots. This memory kit ran with very tight timings configured for CL14-14-14-32 running at 3200 MT/s. I was surprised that TSAIK decided to use a very low DDR4 frequency for the world record overclocking, despite the tight timings.
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX. According to HWBot, the TSAIK results are the only official Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5995WX overclock listed on the site. So there’s plenty of room for other overclockers to try to beat his score.
