AMD’s Aging OEM Quad-Core CPU Finally Debuts at Retail
You may not remember AMD’s Ryzen 3 4300G (Renoir) APU in mid-2020. The quad-core Zen 2 processor, which was an OEM-only SKU, has finally hit the retail market. Given its age, the Ryzen 3 4300G is far from competing with the best CPUs. However, if AMD prices drop low enough, it will definitely sell.
The Ryzen 3 4300G is an entry-level 7nm APU that uses a quad-core, 8-thread configuration with Zen 2 cores. The desktop chip has a base clock of 3.8 GHz, a boost clock of 4 GHz and 4 MB of L3 cache. However, the Ryzen 3 4300G has a configurable TDP (cTDP) ranging from 45W to 65W, making AMD’s Wraith Spire stock coolers or even half-decent alternatives perfectly satisfying.
While not a gaming powerhouse, the Ryzen 3 4300G has the potential to run some of the latest titles at resolutions between 720p (1280 x 720) and 1080p (1920 x 1080) with moderate graphics settings. The onboard Radeon Vega 6 iGPU comes with 6 he CUs at 1.7 GHz. This is the same unit inside his Ryzen 3 5300G new and only available to his OEM customers of AMD. However, the Ryzen 3 5300G will utilize AMD’s Zen 3 cores to boost the chip’s performance over his previous Ryzen 3 4300G.
AM4 socket is an old platform, but still alive. With newer chips like the Ryzen 3 5300G coming out, the Ryzen 3 4300G has probably lost its competitive edge against his OEM. That could be why AMD is bringing its Zen 2 APUs to the retail market almost three years later. Additionally, Intel is tearing AMD apart in the low-end segment, so having another competitor in the game could help AMD a bit.
in its latest AMD Heroes World (opens in new tab) Show, AMD Japan said it will debut the chip in the domestic market on March 10th at a price of ¥15,800 or $115.08. For example, German retail giant Mindfactory lists a quad-core APU for him €5.89 ($90.58) excluding VAT.
The Ryzen 3 4300G will help AMD fill the void in the sub-$100 price range. Before the Ryzen 3 4300G made its way to the retail market, the chipmaker didn’t have a worthy performer with integrated graphics at that price point. The Ryzen 3 3200G, which uses the older Zen+ cores, retails for $80. As for competition, Intel has the Core i3-12100F for around $101, but without integrated graphics. The iGPU-equipped Core i3-12100 has a rather hefty price tag ($142).
