‘Better Call Saul’ Season 6, Episode 9 Recap: Bye Bye Love

Hector is left to ring his bell in a desperate, fruitless protest. Point to the gas that seems to bring out much of the meaning of his life by afflicting the enemy. The scene ends at the moment of explaining why. Fringe is staring at the pool, the same place where he shot and killed Max Arciniega, the love of Gus’s life, many years ago. At that moment, Gas was lying next to Max, close enough to see the blood squirting into the pool.

Gus is plagued by that memory, and when he returns to his home in Albuquerque, we see him regaining his life, his happiness, and his daily routine. But there are limits. When he visits what looks like his favorite restaurant, he has a long conversation with waiter and curious David (Reed Diamond). No one has talked to Gus for such a long time, and Gus seems to be comfortably yelling throughout David’s confession. This is the struck gas on the side of the man we have never seen.

Instead of asking for a date that would happen in the rom-com version of this interlude, the gas leaves immediately while the waiter is collecting a bottle of even more rare wine. Fling has determined that he will never be injured again or has come to the conclusion that the man in his position has no love. It’s a weakness he can’t afford, as his loved one is an easy target for his enemies. They either died or were sent to suicide missions to kill others like Kim in the previous episode.

The best part of this strangely long scene — 6 minutes! —Finally, with a long, tight shot of Gus’s face, you can see Segue from a relaxed and enjoyable state to a tense withdrawal. Without the words of dialogue, you can see him making a firm decision. He must maintain the loveless life of his monastery.

Mike uses some of the downtime after the cleanup to visit Manuel Barga (Juan Carlos Cantu) and explain that his son Nacho has died. (He was taught by Anita, a season 3 sadness counseling companion, about the pain of not knowing the fate of his loved one. Anita’s husband disappeared in the wilderness of New Mexico a few years ago. On the plus side, he says, the murderer of Nachos will be brought to justice soon. Barga corrects Mike. It’s not justice. It will be revenge, he says.
