‘Broadway’ Review: Life on the Margins

True performers know that their craft requires temptation. Because the attraction of the stage is the thrill of escape. Christos Massalas’ kinetic debut, “Broadway,” captures the stark duality of life on the frontier in all of freedom and danger. Set in Athens and haunted by the specter of Greece’s economic crisis, the film follows a charismatic gang of misfits who make their living, at least nominally, as street performers. More precisely, they rely on the distraction of an avid audience, so they can pick their pockets clean.

Nellie (Elsa Rekakou) is a heavy narrator about her foray into their world, which is often clichéd at times. Broadway, an abandoned theater complex complete with an outdoor rooftop cinema. She quickly assimilates into this clan. All are outsiders or exiles. Rudolph (Rafael Papad) and Mohammad (Salim Talbi) are an attractive couple. a locksmith (Christos Politis), a mysterious old man and functional matriarch;and Finally, the mysterious Jonas (Phoibos Papadopoulos), who was hiding with a bruised and bandaged face.

Hotly pursued by the formidable gang known only as the Marabouts, Jonas transforms into Barbara, a veritable bombshell with billowing bronze locks, and Nellie in a glittering jumpsuit for the enchanted crowd. pirouette with When Marcos is sent to prison, Barbara and Nellie establish a sweet romance, but it is jeopardized by the cloud of Marcos’ inevitable return.

Amid some uneven character settings, the cast brings “Broadway” to life with engaging performances, sealed by a moving finale and Gabriel Yared’s signature soaring score.
