Cherry Launches MX Experience Box Keyswitch Sampler

German computer input device and key switch manufacturer Cherry has launched two new product lines. The first new product is Cherry MX Experience Box. This presentation box contains one of each of the company’s full size switches (10 total) in a tray with instructions on the lid. It’s a lot like a box of chocolates. The second product line is Cherry MX Switch Kit, housed in a similar presentation box but featuring 23 single-variety switches. Not surprisingly, he has 10 of his SKUs in this second new product line.

Cherry MX Experience Box

A reference set of Cherry MX keys can be an attractive proposition for collectors, hobbyists, custom PC makers, retailers, reviewers, and more. This boxed presentation set includes his 10 of every full size Cherry MX switch available today. So the 5×2 rows under the lid are: MX RGB Red, MX RGB Speed Silver, MX RGB Silent Red, MX RGB Black, MX RGB Brown, MX RGB Ergo Clear, MX RGB Grey, MX RGB Blue, MX RGB Green, and MX are included. Black clear top switch.

Open the box lid and you’ll find a guide to the specifications and characteristics of the various switches. We’re guessing that anyone buying this box might poke these to get some idea of their ‘feel’. However, you’d probably get a better rating if you hot-swapped a switch from your current keyboard to one of these and pressed it accordingly. Please note that the feel can vary significantly depending on things like keyboard construction and keycap materials.

Given its reported price of €9.99, the Cherry MX Experience Box seems like a pretty good deal considering the 10 switches and package. There is no US pricing, but the euro price includes VAT, so you can probably expect dollar parity, or $9.99.

One concern we have with the Cherry MX Experience Box is that the package is unlikely to last very long with repeated handling. Not comparable to dedicated hardware MX switch tester (link to Amazon US), obviously expensive.

Cherry MX Switch Kit

In these boxes, the purchaser will receive 23 switches of one type shown. Our photos showcase the MX Blue kit. Inquire about building a kit of 23 switches, as the included kit covers the entire alphabet with just three more additions to the box. Cherry’s product page and press release make no mention of the basis for this number.

Cherry offers 10 SKUs of MX switch kits. Again we share the euro price, but depending on which kit you choose, the price varies between €14.99 and €19.99 per kit, which seems reasonable.
