Chess to make headway into Web 3.0 as FIDE partners with Avalanche

The International Chess Federation, popularly known by its French acronym FIDE, has partnered with Avalanche to bring chess to Avalanche, the realm of Web 3.0. announced Founded in 1924, FIDE unites 200 national chess associations into one international federation and oversees the World Chess Championships.

Chess, an ancient board game that originated in India, has evolved and been digitized over the centuries, according to the Federation. Over 100 million people play chess online and participate in over 25 million digital chess matches every day. FIDE believes that bringing chess to Web 3.0 will take the evolution of the game to the next level.

As part of the partnership, Avalanche (AVAX) and Core, a self-custody wallet developed by Ava Labs, will appear as sponsors of the FIDE tournament. This includes the World Rapid and Blitz 2022 Championships, which start his December 25th in Kazakhstan.

More importantly, according to the press release, Avalanche and Core will invest in developing chess-related products on FIDE’s network. Ava Labs, the developer behind Avalanche, has teamed up with FIDE to use blockchain to solve chess challenges and reduce operational inefficiencies for players and federations. The partnership also aims to improve the integrity of the game, welcome new generations of players and foster innovation.

FIDE will use Avalanche’s Subnet technology to create on-chain products such as on-chain player ratings and tournament data management, historic game explorers, and prize pool and digital trophy issuance on Avalanche. The team will also work on adding personalized gaming experiences on-chain, he said.

FIDE CEO Emil Stovsky said in a press release:

“Chess is a unique sport and this cooperation will unite the community and strengthen the relationship between players, clubs, federations and FIDE.”

Ava Labs CEO Emin Gün Sirer added:

“The possibilities created by putting chess on-chain are as limitless as the game of chess itself. Avalanche will allow players around the world to experience chess like never before.”

Note, however, that this partnership is not the first time FIDE has stepped into Web 3.0. 2021, FIDE claimed Become the first international sports federation to launch its own non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace in partnership with TON Labs.
