Debian 14 To Be Named ‘Forky’, Won’t Arrive Until 2027
announced that Debian 14 will continue the time-honored Linux OS tradition of naming releases after characters from Toy Story. Debian list (opens in new tab)the next release will be named after the beloved Forky, an amalgam of spokes and pipe cleaners from the fourth film in the Disney series.
However, Debian 14 has a long way to go in the future as it could be released in 2027 if the OS sticks to its current release cycle. Debian 12, or Bookworm (Toy Story 3’s minor character), has yet to see inside the release servers and will reach its first milestone, the Transition and Toolchain Freeze, on January 12, 2023. Debian 13 will then be called His Trixie, a Triceratops character voiced by Kristen Schaal, and will be released in 2025. Debian 11 Bullseye (Woody’s horse) is the current release he version.
The announcement also calls for help with bug fixes and other testing, such as removing software packages due to bugs, and reverting bug-fixed ones back to the next release. There is an IRC channel for reporting bugs and a bug squashing party is planned.
Debian is the foundation of Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi OS (opens in new tab)and is also available in the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Bookworm is currently using version 5.19 of the Linux kernel (like Bullseye’s backported version, and unstable branch Sid) instead of the recently released 6.0 kernel or 6.1 version (which includes the new Rust language). (opens in new tab) support) may become available when the OS is complete. Of course this is subject to change as the distro is still in active development. The experimental branch kernel is currently 6.0.
The desktop may also change. The 22.10 version uses the Gnome 43 interface released in September. (opens in new tab) This makes a great candidate for Bookworm, but Gnome releases happen every 6 months, so if you’re still open to merging when Bookworm becomes available, the March 2023 Gnome 44 release becomes possible.
