According to an Ars Technica report, Denuvo claims that its Digital Rights Management (DRM) software does not affect the performance of games that utilize it. Steve Huin, video game COO of Irdeto, which owns Denuvo, told Ars that the company is well aware of its reputation in the gaming industry, but that game performance isn’t impacted by the titles that support its service. He said he would assure gamers that it would take development time to make it work. DRM.
Denuvo is a very popular DRM among publishers and has had great success in recent years in preventing pirates and gamers from tampering with their supported titles. But that didn’t stop the dislike of the gaming community. Denuvo has an incredibly bad reputation in the gaming community for hampering game performance and breaking mods.
But Huynh insists the claims that it hinders players’ performance aren’t far from the truth. Huin explained that gamers rarely have access to builds of both protected and unprotected games. Often times, the developer removes his Denuvo (more on that below) months or years later after the game has been given tons of bug fixes and optimizations to make it work better. As a result, gamers end up comparing early versions of the game with Denuvo DRM to later versions of the same game without it, without considering other changes.
Huin claims that the Denuvo team is focused on enforcing security and verifying game performance to ensure that Denuvo does not impair performance in any way. He suggested that Denuvo is a positive force for the gaming community at large, pointing out how anti-piracy technology benefits players and protects publishers’ investments.
But even if the performance claims are genuine, he knows the gaming community won’t take him or Denuvo’s team seriously. As a result, Irdeto (the company that acquired Denuvo) is now working on a program that will give credible news outlets the chance to test games with or without Denuvo DRM, Huin said. Huin hopes the plan will successfully defeat false claims against Denuvo and restore Denuvo’s reputation.
