‘Easter Sunday’ Review: A Feel-Good Filipino Family Comedy

“Easter Sunday” has all the ingredients of a fun family comedy. The film features mostly Filipino actors, with great culturally specific jokes and a cast of characters that fit the typical but true immigrant archetype. It’s not like you can see your family here. A lot of that applies to this Dominican reviewer as well.

Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, the film finds Joe Valencia (Joe Koy) trying to get his career off the ground and the producers give him a Filipino accent to book him a major role. At the same time, he struggles to connect with his son, Junior (Brandon Wardell). The generational divide is also on display at an Easter dinner at the family matriarch’s home in San Francisco, where Joe and Junior take a road trip.

The film is full of really funny moments, including jabs between warring aunts, painstaking cousin hijinks, and situations involving irreverent relationships between family and religion. Additionally, the film contains several winning cameos. Tiffany Haddish plays a police officer and Joe’s old flame, while Lou Diamond Phillips appears as himself. increase. “Easter Sunday” is at its strongest when you’re near the Valencia family, made for TV.

Easter Sunday
Rated PG-13 for violence and some strong language. Running time: 1 hour 36 minutes. at the theater.
