Ford Quarterly Sales Were Up Slightly From Last Year

Ford Motor Co. announced on Tuesday that it sold 483,688 vehicles and light trucks in the United States in the second quarter. This is slightly higher than last year’s sales, which were particularly hit by the global shortage of computer chips.

Almost all automakers report a decline in sales from April to June as a shortage of chips prevented them from keeping up with demand.

A year ago, a shortage of chips forced Ford to close many factories for a long time in the second quarter, resulting in a drop in sales. Its chip supply remains tight.

Despite a slight increase, Ford chased both General Motors and Toyota in the second quarter. GM sold 582,401 vehicles this quarter, down 15%. Toyota sold 531,105 units, down 23%.

Ford sold about 300,000 F-series pickup trucks this quarter, more than double the total for the same period in 2021.

Another bright point was the sale of electric vehicles. Since production began in April, it has sold 2,296 electric pickups, the F-150 Lightnings. The Mustang Mach E, an electric sports utility vehicle, posted sales of 10,941 units in the fourth quarter, up 72% year-on-year.
