GeForce RTX 4090 Reportedly Peaks at 493W to Hit 3.1 GHz
There’s no denying that Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 will be one of the best graphics cards when it launches on October 12th. However, Ada-powered graphics cards consume significant power to deliver breakthrough performance.
The GeForce RTX 4090 has a TDP rating of 450W. This isn’t the first time an Nvidia graphics card has a huge power envelope. The previous generation flagship GeForce RTX 3090 Ti also flaunted his 450W badge. When it comes to power capacity, Nvidia’s recommendations remain the same. At least 850W for the Founders Edition. Some over-engineered custom models with heavy factory overclocks require a 1,200W power supply. Either way, consumers shouldn’t have to spend a fortune on a new power supply, as long as the unit complies with the recommended capacity.
Newly leaked screenshots, courtesy of Twitter users wxnod (opens in new tab)showed a GeForce RTX 4090 running at 2,730 MHz. The Ada flagship has a base clock of 2230 MHz and a boost clock of 2520 MHz. As such, the GeForce RTX 4090 exceeded Nvidia’s specs. The GPU temperature was 65.6 degrees Celsius with hot spots at 74.4 degrees Celsius. Considering the cooling fan was only using 40% of its capacity, these are impressive results. The graphics card appeared to consume 446.9W, so I’m pretty sure it was running stock without overclocking.
The second screenshot reveals a GeForce RTX 4090 with a peak clock speed of 3,135 MHz. The temperature didn’t seem to rise much. GPU-Z hit 68.2 degrees Celsius, up 4% from the previous result. Power consumption jumped to 492.8W, an increase of about 10%. Sadly, the Twitter user didn’t provide any context in the screenshot, so we don’t know if the workload the GeForce RTX 4090 was running or any manual overclocking was included.
The GeForce RTX 4090 will be available on October 12th for $1,599. However, the premium model with its flashy design and liquid cooler will likely retail for closer to $2,000.The GeForce RTX 4080 is priced at $1,199 for the 16GB model and $899 for the 12GB variant, and is due out next month.
