How Wish Built (and Fumbled) a Dollar Store for the Internet

Still, Wish, run by a parent company called Context Logic, was doing well early in the pandemic. This is because the obligation to stay at home restrained competition from physical stores. But last year, as shoppers went on more adventures and became less involved in wishes, digital advertising became more expensive and the company reduced spending. (It was said that the pace will be increased this summer.)

The pressure was also built inside the wish for years.

According to one employee, managers have always moved like chess pieces, resulting in higher turnover rates for workers who are fed up with turmoil. Many employees complained that they weren’t equipped to handle orders that occurred early in the pandemic, and colleagues burned out with intense stress and long periods of time.

Employees said their colleagues were often ignored or awaited after expressing concerns about quality control issues, such as the lack of standardized product sizes for merchants. They said the list of weapons and other illegal products was often not deleted. It seemed like they were offering a fridge for $ 1, but there weren’t many misleading lists like actually selling the magnets shown in the appliance photo.

Four employees said Wish had to perform an experiment involving a raffle-style flash transaction and the customer had to pay a small amount to bid on the item. Employees said the company made only some refunds for losing bids and then only to customers who requested them. Customers who kept silence were not refunded for months — the delay that caused some internal complaints.

Four employees said the long delivery times of Wish were even longer during the pandemic in the turmoil of the supply chain. Employees said the company began extending delivery dates for late orders to avoid paying refunds without notifying customers. One internal document quoted an example of a customer who waited for a missing order for more than three months before a refund request was accepted.

Wish recently announced more accountability measures for merchants. Existing sellers are valued by metrics such as customer reviews and have benefits such as increased exposure of top performers. New merchants (who said the company now includes more sellers from outside China) must be eligible to participate.
