Insight into Apple’s 30% rake on NFT sales & the cross-chain future of gaming – SlateCast #21

Tyrano Studio is renamed Name of Wax Studios, developer and publisher of several web3 games such as Blockchain Brawlers. He is also the developer of the WAX blockchain, which hosts NFTs and gaming projects for the world’s biggest IPs such as Sony, Mattel, Funko, Hasbro.

Michael Rubinelli, Tyranno’s Chief Gaming Officer, joined Akiba for the latest episode of SlateCast to discuss the cross-chain future of Web3 games and touch on Apple’s recent move to allow NFT-based apps.

Regarding Apple’s recent decision to allow NFTs within the Apple App Store, Rubinelli said there is confusion over where the 30% reduction applies. If Apple applied the cuts only to its own sales, Rubinelli argued, creators’ revenue would drop significantly. However, he believes his 30% rake of market fees is viable.

Discussions about Apple’s decision were highlighted during the conversation due to NFT’s relationship with web3 games. Third-party sales are critical to the success of web3 games as they move toward a focus on non-custodial ownership of in-game assets rather than the click-to-earn model of late 2021.

Rubinelli spoke extensively about the role of blockchain within web3 games. The Tyranno rebrand was done to keep the studio away from the WAX blockchain as it launches games and game assets on other blockchains. Ethereum and his BNB chain bridge are now available for his WAX-based games, and users can now buy and sell his WAX NFTs on marketplaces like his OpenSea.

According to Rubinelli, the concept of “play to earn” is dead and he believes gameplay-first is the future and “incredibly exciting.” However, in order to bring new gamers into web3 games, developers must follow Disney’s user adoption model, he argued, Rubinelli. This model suggests that users value convenience above everything else, including security.

“That’s what we have to do. We have to keep relying on convenience, and we have to keep relying on frictionlessness.”

The WAX blockchain allows users to create cloud wallets using traditional Web 2.0 single sign-on methods such as Google, Facebook Connect, Steam and Twitter. The Web 2.5 model that WAX uses is still a very confident model, as Rubinelli said, “People don’t really want decentralization.”
