Intel Appoints Deepak Patil as Head of Graphics Group, Replaces Raja Koduri
Deepak Patil will succeed Raja Koduri as CVP and GM of the reorganized Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics (AXG) group. Jeff McVay served as AXG’s interim leader after Koduri stepped down to head his AI gaming software startup.
Koduri, who previously led AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group, joined Intel in 2017. During his time at Intel, Koduri oversaw his GPU and accelerator projects for chipmakers, including his Intel Xe, Ponte Vecchio, and Arc Alchemist. In addition, he served as Executive Vice President of AXG Group until a recent reorganization returned him to the position of Chief Intel Architect. His CVP and GM of Super Compute Group (SCG), his McVeigh kept AXG’s seat warm while Intel searched for a suitable replacement for Koduri.
“Intel provides competitive accelerated computing products, building scalable systems with easy-to-program software at a predictable cadence. ) to serve as CVP and General Manager of the Group.
Deepak most recently served as DCAI’s Chief Technology Strategy Officer. Having held several senior engineering leadership positions throughout the tech industry, including being a founding member of Microsoft Azure and leading his APEX as a Service business at Dell, he is a firm believer in how software and open ecosystems connect with application developers. We understand the critical role they play in enabling service providers. He brings innovative solutions to market at scale. His extensive system, software, and services experience builds on AXG’s deep silicon and graphics expertise in AI, HPC, and client Intel’s position in the graphics market. accelerate the growth of
Jeff McVay returns to lead the Super Compute Group and assist Deepak in his new role. ”
Patil has been with Microsoft for over 15 years and was one of the founding members of Microsoft Azure. He also has many engineering roles under his belt in his leadership. Prior to joining Intel, he was senior vice president of Dell’s Cloud Platforms and Solutions Group. With his extensive experience in cloud computing, it’s easy to see why Intel hired Patil as Chief Technology and Strategy Officer for its Data Center and his AI Group (DCAI).
AXG is a brutal show to run. Intel makes up his group for 2021 and AXG seems to be pulling in the bad news. Remember the Ponte Vecchio delay? Intel, under the direction of CEO Pat Gelsinger, has ditched many non-core businesses, including Optane, SSDs, 5G modems, and most recently prebuilt servers. It’s kind of a wonder that AXG continues to breathe. The group only fell into a reorganization. It will be interesting to see if Patil can turn the group around as his CVP and GM of his AXG.
