Intel Shows First 80 Gbps Thunderbolt Demo

We are at the Intel Design Center (IDC) in Haifa, Israel for day two of the company’s Technology Tour 2022. There, the company shares new information about its latest products. Today the company showed a quick picture of his first test system running 80 Gbps Thunderbolt.

Intel didn’t share many details, but the demo consisted of dual Thunderbolt lanes running at 40 Gbps each for a total of 80 Gbps. That’s double the performance of Thunderbolt 4, which reaches 40 Gbps in total. The connection is over a USB-C connection, likely taking advantage of the throughput improvements in the USB 4 version 2.0 specification announced earlier this month.

Intel didn’t announce the name of the new technology, nor did it say when it would hit the market. All we know so far is that the technology doubles the speed of his existing Thunderbolt 4 connection.
