Latest Windows 11 Preview Build Adds Search Box to Taskbar

One of the worst aspects of Windows 11 is how it replaces Windows 10’s fully functional search box with a search button that forces you to type your query into a popup menu. Searching in a separate window is annoying and annoying and reminds me of the Windows 8 experience where I had to leave my desktop screen to see the start menu or search bar.

Finally, more than a year after the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft is returning the search box to its native taskbar. The company has been experimenting with the in-taskbar search box in its Dev and Beta builds since his September, and today it’s the latest release preview build with build number 22621.1343.

Enabled by default, the new search box displays the text of your query while displaying results in a pop-up menu. You can then click the result to launch. For example, searching for “Solitaire” resulted in an icon for “Solitaire Collection” in the menu, along with the text “Collection” as a suggestion in the search box itself.

Searching for unmatched content on the computer itself yielded results from the web. For example, typing “McDonald’s” into the search box brought up a list of local restaurants for that franchise. Although this is typical Windows search behavior, it’s nice to have the query text in the taskbar.
