Nvidia RTX 4080 Allegedly Overclocks to 3GHz at Default 320W TDP
According to recent information Chifer Forum Post, found Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4080 16GB benchmarked in 3DMark TimeSpy while overclocking to an impressive 3 GHz clock speed. At 3GHz, the chip outperformed Nvidia’s previous-generation RTX 3090 Ti (overclocked to 2,200MHz) by 3,500 points in the same benchmark.
The RTX 4080 16GB can be seen flat clocking up to 3000MHz in the GPU-Z screenshot shown in the Chiphell forum post. But what’s most impressive is that the 4080 runs at 3GHz peak while still maintaining a default power rating of 320W, with a GPU-Z measured peak power rating of his 333W. The temperature was also very good at 60 degrees Celsius.
This is very different from the 3GHz RTX 4090 results I’ve seen online. 600W power consumption to achieve these very high clock speeds. If the 4090 16GB 3DMark results are correct, we can see that the lower core count model has better overclocking capabilities compared to the RTX 4090.
But for now, the embargo on the review of the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 16GB has not been lifted yet, so don’t take this data with a grain of salt. However, getting the card for testing will give us a better idea of how much these GPUs can really be overclocked.
But overall, it looks like Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace architecture running on a TSMC 4N node has enough headroom to achieve flat 3GHz clock speeds regardless of SKU. Of course, the silicon lottery can influence the number of GPUs that achieve 3GHz flat. However, we wouldn’t be surprised if most RTX 40 series GPUs hit this target frequency based on the results we’ve seen so far with the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090.
TimeSpy score analysis
The RTX 4080 16GB achieved a graphics score of 28,929 points on 3DMark’s TimeSpy benchmark (non-extreme version). That’s exactly 3,518 points, or 13.8% better than the best RTX 3090 Ti result found in 3DMark’s benchmark browser. This result comes with a graphics score of 25,411 points and a massive overclock of 2265MHz.
Unfortunately, there are no RTX 4090 TimeSpy results to compare. Please refer to this result. Again, the RTX 4090 review will be out soon so we have a better idea as to how fast this 3GHz 4080 once was in third party reviews and how fast our own review of the 4090 is will be obtained.
