Poisonous Gas Leak in Jordan Kills at Least 10 People

Amman, Jordan-A toxic gas leak in Aqaba, a port city in southern Jordan, killed at least 10 people and injured about 250, officials said.

A video carried by a state-run news agency showed that a crane lifted a large tanker from a truck and dropped it on the deck of a ship, causing a yellow smoke explosion and driving out dock workers.

The Department of Public Safety said the gas tank caused a leak in transit. The contents of the tanker were not identified.

Authorities said after evacuating the injured to the hospital, authorities blocked the area and dispatched experts to deal with the situation.

The Directorate General has 10 dead and 251 injured. According to the state-owned al-Mamlaka TV, 199 people are still being treated in the hospital.

Dr. Jamal Obedat, a local health official, urged people to stay inside and close windows and doors. The nearest residential area is about 15 miles.

Aqaba is located at the northern end of the Red Sea, next to the Israeli city of Eilat, across the border. Both are popular beach and diving destinations. There were no reports of injuries or contamination at Eilat.
