Politico Names John Harris as Its Top Editor

Politico announced Monday that its top U.S. editor has stepped down and will be replaced by John Harris, one of the magazine’s co-founders, who will also assume additional responsibility for the magazine’s international edition.

Matt Kaminski, who joined Politico from The Wall Street Journal nearly a decade ago, will end his term as editor-in-chief at the end of August, and Politico chief executive Gori Sheikholeslami will join the Monday staff. said in an email to

In a memo, Shaykoslami said Harris’ new role as editor-in-chief would extend to all Politico editorial departments under his jurisdiction.

“Let me be clear, John is not going back to his old job,” Sekkoslami said. “Instead, he’s stepping into his new role as sole chief editor within the company, reporting directly to him in the US and European newsrooms.”

Sheikh Koslami said in an e-mail that after Kaminsky left the post, she would become editor-in-chief of Politico and focus on writing.

This is the latest move in the top ranks of Politico. In March, Kaminsky’s editor-in-chief, Daphna Linzer, resigned after a year. In an email to staff at the time, Mr. Kaminsky admitted that he and Mr. Linzer “felt divided” over Politico’s strategic direction.

Harris founded Politico in 2007 with Jim Vandehey and Robert Allbritton. The company was acquired by German publishing giant Axel Springer for $1 billion in 2021.
