Polkadot looks to 10x transaction speed in new updates

Zegex

Polkadot (DOT) announced New updates to our roadmap, including asynchronous backing optimizations that improve transaction speed by at least 10x.

In a September 26 blog post, Polkadot said it was working to improve the network’s parachain scalability, relay chain governance, cross-chain communication, and parachain development.

asynchronous backing

Asynchronous backing marks the first major upgrade to the Polkadot parachain consensus algorithm since its launch in December 2021. This improves performance over the network from 1,000 TPS today to 100,000 to 1,000,000 transactions per second (TPS).

The network plans to achieve this by reducing the parachain block time to 6 seconds and increasing the block space of each block by a factor of 5-10.

It also makes the parachain block reusable if the relay chain cannot be reached on the first attempt. According to the post, this update should be ready for deployment on Kusama by the end of 2022.

para thread

Another development on the roadmap is Parathreads, which makes building on Polkadot easier. This will allow developers to build on the network without having to win a parachain auction.

Called “pay-as-you-go parachains,” these are “simple, easy, and accessible entry points for launching L1 chains on top of Polkadot and Kusama.” Parathreads is expected to be ready in the first half of 2023.

nomination pool

A blog post revealed that the Polkadot ecosystem is working towards upgrading its “nomination pool and fast-unstake”.

According to the post, Nomination Pools will be a major upgrade to Polkadot’s staking system, allowing users to create staking pools that other users can join. Finally, a new update will allow smaller nominators to participate in the staking system.

The pool has been live on Kusama since June.

Other development

Other planned developments include XCMv3, an improvement to the XCM universal language for cross-chain communication.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, Polkadot plans to update its governance to be as decentralized as possible with the Polkadot Fellowship. This will be rolled out in Kusama by the end of this year.

Other improvements target staking, bridging, and community building.
