Raspberry Pi Mini PC Beats Commute Boredom
Nothing to mess around with raspberry pi But why not take it with you if you can? That’s where maker, developer, and 3D artist Thor Brigsted’s latest project comes in.He Ultra mobile PC (UMPC) features our favorite SBC, which is just 5 inches wide.
According to Brigsted, the need for this project was conceived out of a need to fill idle time spent on public transport. His UMPC allows Brigsted to program on the go while familiarizing himself with the intricacies of Linux. Not only is he experimenting with programming on his Pi, but he’s also using the system to develop new games from scratch.
The case was 3D printed and designed by Brigsted just for the project. Allow access to some ports. Users have access to an HDMI port, a minijack, two her USB 2.0 ports, and a USB-C charging port. Brigsted explains that the design is still a work in progress and new features will be added in future updates.
Possible case modifications include a removable plate on the bottom that allows full access to the GPIOs. This is a great idea for experimenting with hardware. There are also plans to round the corners of the shell to make it easier to slip in and out of pockets. The current case design is open source and available for anyone to check out. Syngeverse.
Brigsted has kindly shared the complete parts list for those interested in recreating the UMPC and trying to understand how it all fits together. Inside is a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and a 5 inch DSI touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480. Powered by a Heldertech LP675776 battery, it also features a Rii Joy-It keyboard for typing with backlight options.
As for software, Brigsted loaded the machine with the Raspberry Pi OS. That being said, there’s no reason you can’t use other operating systems like DietPi or RetroPie, but you’ll need a controller set aside for emulation. Brigsted tested the system and found it suitable for streaming media and games from his PC.
