Raspberry Pi Turns Truck into Giant Dot Matrix Printer
How long will he stop the luggage thief? dust with flour or recreate Stranger Things Christmas Lights, it’s no exaggeration to say that maker Ryder Damen’s projects are always ‘brimming with creativity’. Today we share another great piece of his work using our favorite of his SBCs. raspberry pi. Rider somehow giant dot matrix printer with his truck.
The printing process works by dropping water droplets on the road while the truck is running. Carefully drip water to create letter shapes to form your custom message. The system is mounted in the rear of the truck and controlled from inside the cabin using a web interface. Once the message is parsed, a series of tubes guide the water into place and work with precision to create shapes similar to a dot-matrix printer.
The Raspberry Pi is responsible for running the web interface, accepting user input for new messages, and sending commands to trigger the aqueous printing system. In this case, Ryder chose to use his Raspberry Pi 4, but older models such as the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and possibly the Raspberry Pi Zero are also fine to use.
In the video, Ryder details the design and assembly process for a project that relies on several hoses and valves. Follow the instructions on the Raspberry Pi to release the water using the solenoid. A bucket of water is located at the back of the truck and is connected to the printer system for easy refilling.
Unfortunately the code for this project hasn’t been published yet, but we have an idea of how it works. The Raspberry Pi hosts a web server that the user can connect to from her web browser and enter new messages for printing. The text is converted to an image and processed for printing using solenoids.
