Shuttle’s New SW580R8 Barebones Workstation Supports Xeon W CPUs
Taiwanese small PC company Shuttle announces Via EU site (opens in new tab) A new model in the XPC Barebone line, it is the first Shuttle PC that can accept Intel Xeon W processors, has 4 Ethernet ports and is compatible with error correction RAM.
SW580R8 (opens in new tab) It’s not going to win any awards for its name, but it’s revolutionary in other respects: a case as compact as the Shuttle only contains the motherboard and PSU. It’s up to you to provide your own CPU, RAM stick, and graphics.Small, but not as small as what we saw (opens in new tab).
The chipset included is Intel’s W580, a workstation-oriented product that can house Intel’s 10th and 11th generation Xeon W processors. (opens in new tab) The incarnation has 6 or 8 hyper-threaded cores, turbo speeds up to 5.3 GHz, and power consumption up to 125 W. Of course, you don’t have to accept all this processing power. However, you can put anything up to Celeron G5905.
The Xeon W chips all have an Intel UHD P750 integrated GPU, while the case can accommodate a PCIe 4.0 x16 dual-slot AIB. There are 4 RAM slots supporting up to 128 GB of ECC RAM and numerous ports including 1x HDMI 2.0b, 2x DisplayPort 1.4, 4x 10Gbit USB 3.2 and 1x 5Gbit USB 3.2 Type C. There are also 3 USB 3.2 and 4 USB 2.0 Type-A ports, the audio is on the back, and 4 Ethernet sockets (2 of which are 2.5Gbps, the others are plain Gigabit). One supports vPro and Intel’s Active Management Technology, AMT, which can provide remote management even when the PC is powered off.
Inside, you can install 6 drives using all ports, and the case comes with a cooling system designed to keep it all cool. Accessories include a wireless upgrade kit, a mounting frame for your hard drive, and an upgraded 850W power supply in case the built-in 500W unit isn’t enough. It’s a tiny black cube measuring just 33.2 x 21.5 x 19.0 cm (13 x 8.5 x 7.5 inches) with a lot of power inside.
The recommended price is €483, which translates to $495 as the two currencies are currently close. Cases should be readily available from specialty retailers.
