Sony Building PlayStation Handheld Just for Remote Play, Report Says

According to an exclusive from Sony, a new Sony PlayStation branded handheld gaming device is in the works. insider gameHowever, this 8-inch device requires a constant network connection to the PlayStation 5, so Sony’s claimed portable device won’t be a true successor to the PlayStation Portable or PlayStation Vita. So if you don’t have a PS5, or are in a location with no internet connection, no, not a PSP Go.

To be clear, the new device, codenamed “Q Lite,” isn’t a cloud gaming device like Logitech’s Android-based G Cloud. Instead, that network connection exists solely for streaming your game library on the PS5. The feature is called Remote Play on his PS5, but other consoles and PC gaming portals have similar services. Rumor has it that Q Lite owners will be able to enjoy portable PS5 games with adaptive streaming up to 1080p and 60fps (frames per second).

But again, Remote Play is already there, available for both PCs and Macs, tablets, smartphones, and even (unofficially) the Raspberry Pi. So… service-only handheld devices aren’t all that attractive.

Of course, if you’re playing on a PC/Mac/tablet/phone, you’ll need a DualSense controller (or DualShock 4) for an authentic PlayStation experience, but the Q Lite has an 8-inch touchscreen. The controller section seems to borrow a lot of design/style from the latest PS5 controller, with Insider Gaming saying there will be updated adaptive triggers with haptic feedback.
