Steam Deck Controls a Real Ukrainian Army Machine Gun Turret: Report
Valve’s Steam Deck is gaining traction in Ukraine as a new tool for the Ukrainian military. To clarify: A recent post showed a remote-controlled machine gun turret that appeared to be powered (or at least controlled) by a popular portable PC gaming handheld device.
Images shared by ТРО Меdia‘s Facebook account (h/t Gaming On Linux) shows various aspects of the turret design and a soldier deploying it for field testing. In one of the seven images of him, the remote operator can clearly be seen holding his deck of shiny steam, against the backdrop of a machine gun turret. It would be even more interesting to see what the remote control interface looks like, but presumably the interface/UI is military classified.
TPO Media shared some brief background information about the remote machine gun turret along with a photo. The turret, called “Sabria”, is an “automatic remote control” device, suggesting that the turret may operate with some degree of autonomy. Similar to manual remote monitoring, aiming and firing, Sabria could potentially be programmed with the Steam Deck to mark targets and allow the gun to do its job as quickly and efficiently as possible. .
TPO Media shared some details on how Sabila can be remotely controlled from up to 500m (500m) away. The turret could be used for both stationary operation and vehicle mounting.
Additionally, according to a TRO Media post, Sabria can outmaneuver low-flying enemy drones. get more of these types of weapons from China.
Found some footage showing the same Sabria turret device in action (scroll down to the reply tweet) — you can see the machine guns firing, but only a few steam decks I can not see.
Finally, TPO Media says Sabila is not limited to the weapons demonstrated in the images and videos. The system/chassis can accommodate a wide variety of anti-personnel and anti-tank weapons.
