Straight Outta Cyberpunk: Headphone Concept Features on-Ear Displays

Olga Orel’s new headphone concept adds a whole new dimension to these popular (and some say must-have) audio accessories.called Future-proof headphones, sponsored by Behance, this “Future Nostalgia” product design combines influences from retro technology sources with the modern urge to integrate display panels into everything. The result is a set of tins that looks and feels like Cyberpunk 2077.
A mix of product images shared by Orel shows that the display covers almost the entire outside of the earcups. The boxy shape of the earcups will help future manufacturers source off-the-shelf displays for this product.
I am grateful to Orel for thinking about this issue, as the benefits of wearing the display in the ear are dubious. According to Futureahead’s headphone designers, the display will help:
- Share your musical experience through album art
- View playlists, track info, or lyrics
- Show music visualization
- Display of user-configured video or images
- express one’s feelings
- Device status display (volume, charging, battery, etc.)
If you ever use public transport, you’ll notice people wanting to share the music they’re listening to. The Futureahead headphone concept takes this kind of conspicuous music consumption to another level with every kind of visual imaginable. However, incorporating such a battery-draining component into headphones for the benefit of others will obviously require the square can to be charged more frequently, unless used in wired mode, in which case the battery will It will be exhausted. From your mobile phone or media player.
Orel shares some technical specs for Futureahead designs. The headset is supposed to work in wired (USB-C) and Bluetooth wireless modes. In addition, the ear cushions are attached with magnets, so you can easily replace them according to your preference and maintenance. Several intuitive physical controls are included in the design, such as a volume wheel and a button to turn the display on/off (useful when no one is around to stare). Other than these physical controls, the user is expected to configure much of his Futureahead headphones via the app. In particular, it requires selection and fine-tuning of what is shown on the earcup displays.
Some readers may question the appeal of headphones with earcup displays. Especially for those who believe that form must closely follow function and appreciate minimal design. Even those who love his PC’s features like unrelated RGB lighting and integrated component displays might question the value of an ear-worn display. Meanwhile, those currently yelling “get your money” on this product will have to wait until the release date and price of this boldly different headset design is revealed.
