‘The Flash’ | Anatomy of a Scene

“My name is Andy Muschietti, the director of The Flash. He gets a call from Alfred to come to Gotham because he needs to help Batman.” “Alfred. Can you hear me? That’s my stomach.” And ironically, he’s the fastest man alive and arrives everywhere late, which fans know all too well. There was this scene, and at first I thought it needed something a little more powerful, so I came up with this scene where a lot of babies are being thrown into the void, and Flash has to do something about it No. All I wanted was to test a superhero, I wanted to test his super powers, but basically, even if you were the most legit person alive. I explained that it can be difficult for even the fastest person to save different people at the same time, so what happens is that basically, he’s not just falling, he’s nine people. It means we have to save the baby, but we’re not eating breakfast, so the calories are down too, so everything starts to speed up, that’s another narrative gimmick that we have Yes, basically we are seeing events from his point of view, and when he is full of energy, everything seems to stand still in time. When his calories go down, which means he doesn’t have enough fuel to hit his cap, everything starts going faster, and this is what he’s doing.” [BABY CRYING] “I think he’s going to have a baby.” [BABY WAILING] “And instead he goes destroying vending machines with the goal of getting enough calories to regain strength.” [INTENSE MUSIC PLAYING] “But there’s no question that the superhero is set up to be vulnerable and even if he has superpowers, he’s not invulnerable. We have to go back to human standards and judgments.” [WHOOSHING] [BANGING] “I really wanted Ezra to do every single shot of him playing Flash. They were so dedicated to doing the stunts, too. It’s going to be a moment, obviously in post-production you have to make some decisions that basically favor a more spectacular version of the shot, in which case it has to be full CG. Most of Barry’s scenes are played by Ezra, of course, using digital set extensions, so Ezra spent days hanging on wires to bring this scene to life. And no baby was harmed during the making of this scene.” [BABIES CRYING] [WOMAN SCREAMING]
