Third-Party Tool Saves Power On Nvidia Graphics Cards
What’s better than a fast graphics card? Fast and power efficient. Even if he owns one of the best graphics cards, he doesn’t always need that maximum firepower.Created by independent developer simonmacer Nvidia power management (opens in new tab) (NVPMM) software is a third-party utility for advanced users to manage the power of GeForce graphics cards. This is not his Nvidia official tool, so users should proceed with caution.
NVPMM utilizes Nvidia’s System Management Interface (SMI), a command line tool that allows users to manage and monitor GeForce, Quadro, Tesla, and GRID products. As such, NVPMM provides a GUI for consumers rather than a command-line interface.
The GeForce Control Panel already has primitives.
Power management modes and options that limit the frame rate of Nvidia graphics cards. Windows 11 still has some options to limit the power consumption of your graphics card. However, NVPMM offers more options at a more granular level.
NVPMM’s feature set includes creating individual power profiles, defining per-application power caps, and adaptive control of graphics card memory. This utility also comes with a basic performance health monitor. Apparently the software can’t remove the power limit on GeForce graphics cards. Instead, stick to the maximum and minimum ranges enabled by your graphics card. However, the developer states that the GeForce RTX 4090 has a wider range than his other Ada Lovelace-based SKUs.
The software also features what the developers call the Power Group Limit Management (PGLM) feature. This allows the user to set power limits for her three groups (A, B, and C) and place applications in different groups to take effect. For example, for Group A he set a power limit of 320W, Cyberpunk 2077 executable in that group. Then, when NVPMM detects Cyberpunk 2077 is running, the graphics card is limited to 320W. When you exit the game, the settings will revert to stock.
Users are free to play with the power limits of their GeForce graphics cards. However, the settings are saved at the software level and will be reset after a system reboot. This is the same behavior as manual overclocking, where software such as MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision X1 have to apply settings on every reboot. Same as NVPMM. To apply the user’s power capping profile when the system boots to the operating system, an application must be installed and running.
some users Guru3D forum (opens in new tab) It has been reported that Norton and Windows Defender have flagged NVPMM as a Trojan horse. However, due to the nature of the functionality of the software, it may result in false positives. Version 2.5 passed Eset Antivirus testing, virus total (opens in new tab) I flagged the executable as malicious.
