Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will be stepping down on June 30, she announced Friday.
At an agency-wide meeting, Dr. Warenski admitted to having mixed feelings about her decision and broke down in tears.
“I assumed this role with the goal of leaving the dark days of the pandemic behind and moving the CDC and Public Health to a better and more trusted place.
It was unclear who would head the agency after she left.
During his tenure, Dr. Wallenski said in an email that the agency administered more than 670 million vaccinations, provided clinical guidance and advice to schools and businesses on vaccination, and said, “We have the largest It has protected the country and the world from the threat of infectious diseases, seen for more than 100 years.”
Dr. Wallenski assumed command of the beleaguered agency in January 2021. She had a near-impossible task ahead of her. It was to restore her once-prestigious CDC reputation at a time when public confidence in the institution was low.
Her emails to staff seemed to suggest that she believed she had at least somewhat improved the agency’s reputation.
