Washington Post names David Shipley as its opinion editor.

The Washington Post nominated Bloomberg’s senior editor, David Shipley, on Thursday to oversee its opinion section.

Shipley will take on the role of editor of the editorial page after Fred Hyatt, who has been the post’s opinion chief for over 20 years, died in December.

In a statement, The Post’s publisher, Fred Ryan, said Shipley “advanced the Washington Post in finding new and innovative ways to increase viewership and serve them around the world. Said that it would be useful.

“David has the intellectual curiosity, thoughtful independence, completeness of journalism, and impartial judgment that are essential to editors of editorial pages,” Ryan said in a statement.

The post said in a news release that 59-year-old Shipley will be tasked with expanding the scope of the opinion section both domestically and internationally. This section has more than 80 staff.

Shipley has led Bloomberg’s Opinion Section for over a decade. Prior to that, he was a Deputy Editing Page Editor and Editorial Editor for The New York Times.

Tim O’Brien will be the new editor of the Bloomberg Opinion, and Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwaite told staff in a Thursday memo.

Shipley also worked in the Clinton administration in the 1990s and played an interlude to help Bloomberg founder Michael R. Bloomberg run a short-term presidential campaign in 2020.

In a note to post-employees on Thursday, Ryan was “outstanding” in a seven-month survey in which Shipley involved more than 150 candidates, and Ryan told staff “globally.” He said he guaranteed it to be “comprehensive.”
