Discord Throttles Nvidia GPU Memory Clock Speeds, Here’s the Fix
If you are an avid Discord user and own an Nvidia graphics card, you may be unknowingly slowing down your performance. NVIDIA (opens in new tab) discovered a bug in the Discord application that prevents the memory of the highest graphics cards from reaching maximum speed.
The latest update to Discord software adjusts the memory clock for Nvidia graphics cards. When the software runs in the background, the graphics card does not reach its maximum memory clock and performance suffers. This is an interesting bug that only affects Nvidia graphics cards. Specifically, it affects the memory subsystem. The chip maker has not identified which models are affected, so we can only assume that all of their graphics cards are affected.
Nvidia didn’t share how Discord corrupts graphics card memory. However, Discord recently enabled AV1 support for him on Nvidia’s latest GeForce RTX 40 series (Ada Lovelace) graphics cards, so this bug could be related to his AV1 encoding support for video streaming. . That said, this is a bug that was able to slip through the developers.
Nvidia says it will push the fix to PC users via an over-the-air (OTA) update. However, if you don’t want to wait for an official fix, there is a simple solution. The chipmaker has shared the following methods to manually resolve bugs in their Discord application.
