The Ethereum Push Notification Service, known as EPNS, includes renamed Pushing the protocol with “first steps towards the future of multi-chain communication”.
The branding will go into effect on September 27th, and all existing “channels, notifications, $PUSH tokens, and apps will remain unchanged.”
In a Medium article, the protocol announced that the move marks an evolution of EPNS beyond Ethereum. The blog post also reports two of his groundbreaking innovations behind the change. The first is to support non-Ethereum L1 and L2. The second is to evolve past notifications into “all forms of communication.”
“Push protocols will continue to evolve by enabling flexible, decentralized middleware that serves as a public good for solving decentralized communication problems.”
EPNS is a communication layer that allows users to receive notifications from web3 dApps in ways that were previously not possible. Users can download her EPNS app, connect their wallets and allow notifications based on on-chain events. It claims to be network-agnostic and censorship-resistant due to its distributed middleware architecture.
This service can be used to reliably notify users of governance proposal updates from DAOs such as MakerDAO, or even in-game notifications from web3 games, before the ENS domain expires. Since January 2022, the protocol has sent 17 million notifications across 100 channels and has 60,000 subscribers.
Changes to the push protocol also open up the project to other forms of communication, such as messaging between wallets.
