October was a crazy month for the GPU market. Nvidia has launched its highly anticipated (albeit overpriced) RTX 4090 graphics card, while Intel has launched two of his new A-series GPUs. However, GPU prices on top graphics cards such as GeForce RTX 30 series and Radeon RX 6000 cards are also high this month and continue to drop.
Starting with the bad news, Nvidia’s RTX 4090 saw a significant price hike to $2,250 just after the GPU launched last week. Nvidia’s suggested retail price is his $1,600, but consumers have used up all of his RTX 4090 supplies, with retailers selling out shortly after launch. This action, coupled with scalpers, has effectively depleted all RTX 4090 inventory, and the few remaining 4090 listings have been forced to overvalue SKUs to make up.
But there are exceptions. Physical stores such as MicroCenter sell the RTX 4090 at the suggested retail price. Until Nvidia ramps up supply in the coming weeks and months, it’s the best way to get your hands on an RTX 4090.
Thankfully, the only card with supply issues is Nvidia’s RTX 4090. The rest of the GPU market is doing very well, with most models selling at suggested retail prices.
Nvidia’s RTX 3090, RTX 3070, and RTX 3060 Ti have seen their biggest price cuts since last month, with price drops of 13%, 16.7%, and 11.1% respectively. The average price of the RTX 3090 is $940, the 3070 is $450 and the 3060 Ti is $400. The rest of Nvidia’s RTX 30 series lineup will only get price cuts within the range of 1% to 7%.

When it comes to Nvidia’s RTX 2060 and GTX 16 series GPUs, the RTX 1660 Ti and RTX 1650 GDDR6 variants are the only models to see significant price cuts of 17.4% and 15.8% respectively. With the RTX 1660 Ti priced at $190 less than the RTX 1660 Super, the RTX 1650 GDDR6 will cost just $6 more than the regular RTX 1650.
AMD is seeing similar price cuts on its Radeon RX 6000 series GPUs. The RX 6950XT, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6700 (non-XT) see the biggest price drops at 12.1%, 10%, and 16.7% respectively. Note, however, that the RX 6700 doesn’t have his MSRP, so AIB is free to price the card freely without restrictions. That’s probably why the card currently shows such a high discount rate.
The RX 6950 XT is currently priced at $800, the RX 6800 XT at $540 and the RX 6700 at $350. The rest of AMD’s lineup generally sees discounts under 9%.
As for Intel’s Arc Alchemist GPUs, Newegg appears to be the only retailer carrying Arc GPUs for the time being as Intel’s Arc GPUs are regularly out of stock. So check Newegg often if you need it.

The GPU market looks strong in October 2022. GPU prices continue to trend downwards – even though new GPU launches are or will begin soon. Many Nvidia and AMD graphics cards are currently selling below their MSRP and already have more discounts than last month.
If you need to buy a GPU now, now is the perfect time. However, if you can only hold out for a few months, we recommend waiting for the next-generation GPU.
Nvidia’s RTX 40 series is out with the RTX 4090 already out and the RTX 4080 16GB coming soon. Nvidia plans to start announcing more RTX 40 series GPUs in early 2023 and complete the rest of the lineup later that year.
Nvidia’s next-generation Ada Lovelace GPU microarchitecture is a compelling GPU architecture when the RTX 4090 is considered. The 4090 has a very high MSRP, but its performance is undeniably impressive. What’s more, it represents the most noticeable generational performance improvement we’ve seen so far on Team Green, with a 50% to 73% improvement over the 3090 Ti (not even the 3090). If the rumors are true, AMD isn’t far behind Nvidia’s 40-series GPUs. AMD’s next-generation RX 7000 series GPUs powered by the RDNA3 microarchitecture are about to be announced and the launch date is expected to be his late 2022 or early 2023. % improvement in number of cores.
If Nvidia and AMD’s next-gen GPUs offer the same generational performance boost as the 4090, performance would be a big reason to skip the current-gen GPUs. Assuming all tiers get the same generational improvement as the RTX 4090. Even with a slightly higher starting price than the RTX 30 series, gamers will get significantly more performance than the previous generation.
Of course this might not happen, but I’ve never seen performance like the RTX 4090, so anything could happen. It’s probably best to wait and see what the rest of the series and Nvidia’s RTX 40-series GPUs have to offer.
