Guardian Names Betsy Reed, The Intercept’s Top Editor, to Run Its U.S. Newsroom

Betsy Reed, editor-in-chief of The Intercept, has been appointed editor-in-chief of The Guardian’s US newsroom, according to a British press.

Since 2015, Reed has run Intercept, a newsroom specializing in research journalism on topics such as national security and criminal justice. Prior to her participation in Intercept, Reed was Editor-in-Chief of The Nation.

Katharine Viner, Editor-in-Chief of Guardian News & Media, described Reed as “one of the best and most experienced editors in the United States” in a statement.

“I feel very optimistic about the outlook for Guardian US, with Betsy joining to lead the US effort and having more than one million paid supporters around the world,” Weiner said. Stated in a statement.

A Guardian spokeswoman said Reed will replace John Malholland sometime in the fall.

Intercept said it was promoting Roger Hodge, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Intercept, to replace Mr. Reed. Nausicaa Renner, Washington Editor of The Intercept, will be the Deputy Editor.

While at Intercept, Reed oversaw award-winning research journalism, including the George Polk Awards, the National Magazine Awards, and the Sydney Hillman Prize. Intercept was also the finalist of last year’s Pulitzer Prize for the podcast “Somebody,” an investigation into the killing of a young black man in Chicago.
