Incoming AMD A620 Chipset Looks to Fulfill $125 Motherboard Pledge
It looks like AMD is getting serious about its ongoing motherboard pricing issue and finally ready to offer a cheap motherboard for its latest Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 AM5 processor. HKEPCAMD is preparing two versions of its upcoming A620 motherboard chipset aimed at budget-conscious consumers.
Current entry-level AM5 motherboards use the B650 chipset with standard PCIe 4.0 support for graphics and NVMe storage. Step up to the B650 Extreme and get native PCIe 5.0 support. Visit Newegg and find the cheapest B650 motherboard Gigabyte B650M DS3H, (opens in new tab) The price is $159.99. The next cheapest ASRock B650M PG Riptide WiFi, (opens in new tab) The price is $174.99.
The AMD A620 chip will come in two versions, the ‘Promontory 21’ chip will be used first and a new A620 chip (Promontory 22??) will launch later with the same specs.January 30, 2023
A620 motherboards could approach the $125 price AMD first mentioned when it announced its Ryzen 7000 processor platform. HKEPC reports that the codename for his first A620 chip is Promontory 21. AMD then switches to Promontory 22. It will have the same hardware specs as its predecessor. We don’t know why AMD intends to launch his two feature identical versions of his A620. But while the latter may be cheaper to manufacture, it may not make it in time for AMD’s launch.
Given AMD’s need to deliver a lower price point, the A620 is likely to be a PCIe 4.0-only chipset. You can design a motherboard with fewer layers to keep costs down. However, future buyers of his A620 motherboards cannot get away with the additional cost of DDR5 memory versus the much cheaper DDR4 memory supported by his rival Intel platform. AMD is DDR5 exclusive on all 600-series Ryzen 7000 chipsets.
The A620 motherboards should hit the retail market soon as the Eurasian Economic Commission’s list revealed the following motherboards earlier this month. According to Videocardz.
- Asus TUF Gaming A620M-PLUS D5
- Gigabyte A620M D3H
- Gigabyte A620M DS3H
- Gigabyte A620M S2H
- Gigabyte A620M H
- Gigabyte A620M K
These motherboards are just a few of what is likely to be a larger stream of A620 motherboards coming in the coming months.
The cheapest AM5 processor in AMD’s arsenal to pair with the A620 is the Ryzen 5 7600 with a suggested retail price of $229 (Ryzen 5 7600X retails at $249) and a free digital download of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. Bundled.
