Monetizing online identities with SimpDAOs

Bloomberg Crypto Editor-in-Chief, Stacey Marie Ishmael and his guests, Bloomberg Reporter Emily Nicole and PhD. Student Florence Smith Nichols talked about online identities and the emergence of SimpDAO as a way to monetize them. Recently An episode of the Bloomberg Crypto Podcast.

Ishmael emphasized the importance of the subject by saying:

“It’s not a whole new concept, especially if you’re experimenting with who online, especially if their identities are really different from the way they present to the analog world. […] It’s no wonder people are using cryptography and blockchain to play with their self-expression.

However, some people are using blockchain-enabled structures to monetize these experiments by identity, including gender representation.

These DAOs have been increasing in number since January 2022. The influencer himself can be set up to monetize the online ID sexually or Platonicly, or it can be set up by a third party who does not seek the influencer’s permission.

The term comes from Simping, a slang term used to describe someone who has a strong sympathy for someone else. In the case of SimpDAO, the members, or “simps,” are usually men who are willing to express praise to female influential people.

Simp DAO by influencers

One of the first and most popular Simp DAOs, IreneDAOIs an excellent example of SimpDAO launched with the blessing of influencers.

Irene DAO Established By a 28-year-old influencer Yuqing Irene Zhao.. After Zhao created a line of stickers for fans for use in the Telegram group, one member suggested she mint them as an NFT.

With her consent, her fan community tokenized the stickers, created 1,106 NFT lines, all sold out in minutes. Celebrities like CEO of Galaxy Investment Partners Mike Novogratz And the famous YouTuber Logan Paul I also bought her NFT.

IreneDAO is an example of a female influential person who uses cryptographic mechanisms to create their own communities and sources of income. In such cases, fans can contribute to the influencer’s reputation by actively participating in DAOs and deciding which projects to work on.

Zhao commented on her success with SimpDAO, Bloomberg:

“Fans can come up with highly structured advice on how to do DAO, how to put themselves in the space, whether to place ads on Instagram, and so on. Without IreneDAO, I wouldn’t even have the opportunity to interact with them. “

IreneDAO provides a gateway to the fan community and governance of DAO itself. Some influencers set up SimpDAO to sell their fans the opportunity to meet on video, but some influencers also have sexual implications.

SimpDAO for influencers

So far, SimpDAO doesn’t seem to be concerned. The concept is tricky if the owner of the DAO is not the influencer himself. Unfortunately, such Simp DAOs are also on the rise.

Often, these unauthorized SimpDAOs are launched using influencer IDs, such as the following example. Pokidao, Twitch Streamer Simp DAO founded for Poki Maine. However, there are SimpDAOs with world-famous names such as: Elon Musk, Dua LipaAlso Zendaya..

Most of the owners of such SimpDAO claim that what they are doing is not wrong. They often adopt the doctrine of simple fan groups. For example, Dua Lipa’s Simp DAO says “For Simp, by Simp” It’s in the Twitter header.

Another example is the influential Belle Delphine unauthorized Simp DAO. He became world famous when he sold her bath water to fans. The owner of BelleDAO acknowledged that Delphine was not included in the project and said:

“I don’t think it has anything to do with Belle Delphine just by using her picture.”
