To demonstrate, the motherboard can be seen running a Core i5-12400. This is a locked chip that typically tops out at 4.4 GHz and has a base clock frequency of 5 GHz with 125 MHz. If the photos do it justice, this is the first confirmation that MSI will be adding BCLK overclocking capabilities to his B760 version of Mortar Max.

MSI is one of the few motherboard manufacturers to include an external clock generator on today’s Intel motherboards, especially low-end boards like the B-series. This is a great option for building a budget system if you can’t afford to buy K-series parts. This way you can use a cheap motherboard and a cheap CPU and still have the same overclocking capabilities.
BCLK overclocking is an alternative method of overclocking that instead relies on changing the base frequency of the entire system to generate a higher core clock instead of increasing the CPU core multiplier. The advantage of his BCLK overclocking now is that it bypasses Intel’s artificial overclocking lock and can overclock any Intel CPU. However, Intel’s default clock generator built into the chip is also locked on non-K CPUs, so you’ll need an external clock generator.
Other than mentioning the RC26008 clock generator, the tweet doesn’t say anything else about the B760M Tomahawk. However, based on previous coverage of his B760 motherboards in general, we would expect his B760 version of Mortar Max to be very similar to its predecessor, his B660, but perhaps just a tad more expensive.
It’s great that MSI continues to implement base clock generators on low-end motherboards such as the B760M Mortar Max, giving users another way to overclock Intel’s CPUs. If this is correct, this is his second motherboard in his MSI with this exact same external clock generator, the previous model being his B660M Mortar Max WiFi.
