Nvidia Is Automatically Updating Systems to Fix the Discord Bug

A fix is in the works to solve the Discord bug plaguing Nvidia’s GeForce gaming graphics cards. However, you may or may not have the update yet as it appears to automatically download to your system without your knowledge. We’ve reached out to Nvidia for clarification on exactly who is affected, how to apply the patch, and other details, and we’re still awaiting a response, but here’s what we know:

NVIDIA announced an update (opens in new tab) For Discord a few days ago. However, the chip maker’s vague statement has caused even more confusion among GeForce graphics card owners. The post contained no indication other than that the patch would arrive as his OTA (Over-the-Air) update. Apparently, no user intervention is actually required other than a system reboot for it to take effect.

“NVIDIA GeForce users can now download an application profile update for Discord that has recently caused the memory clock on some GeForce GPUs to not reach full speed while Discord was running in the background. Initially, users were confused whether the update was offered as a Windows update or as a driver update. Nvidia later clarified that the Nvidia driver uses application profile updates. However, the chipmaker has not specified whether he needs the GeForce Experience software for automatic downloads and updates. Not everyone uses his GeForce Experience as some gamers prefer to stick to the bare minimum and only install GeForce drivers.

But there are still many open questions. For example, Nvidia has not checked if the mechanism is the same for the Studio Driver and the Game Ready Driver. Nor did the company mention his Linux user. There’s also little concrete information as to which his Nvidia GPUs and drivers were specifically affected, and whether the same fix will be available for all of them.

The problem with automatic downloads that happen in the background is that you never know when or if an update has been installed. Affected users can leave Discord open and run the game to see if their graphics card memory is at full speed, but if the issue persists, they are offered to reboot their PC. It is also unclear what triggers an update other than 1 Twitter user (opens in new tab) Nvidia’s automatic deployment is said to not work on Windows 11 systems or systems with automatic updates disabled. In that case, we recommend applying the manual fix detailed by Nvidia. here (opens in new tab).

We currently assume that you need at least GeForce Experience installed and running to download and install application profile updates. This means that you also need to be logged into GeForce Experience. We have reached out to Nvidia for clarification on some of your inquiries and will update you with further information regarding fixes as they become available.
