Phanteks’ Revolt PSU Revolts Against Cables, Doesn’t Come With Them
Even if you buy the best power supply, you may not like the cable that comes with it. To address this issue, you can purchase an extension cable or look for a custom cable that works with your specific make and model of PSU.
But if you don’t like the bundled cable anyway, why don’t you buy it separately? That’s the philosophy behind the new Phanteks Revolt power line the company unveiled at his Computex 2023.
Available in capacities ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 watts, Revolts are based on Seasonic’s Vertex platform and meet all ATX 3.0 specifications. To get the cable, though, you’ll need to purchase it from Cablemod, a company that specializes in custom power cabling.
Cablemod has a custom configurator that allows you to choose exactly the cable, color and style you want. The company will also be selling bundles aimed at the Revolt line.
However, it’s important to note that Cablemod is by no means cheap. Using the configurator, he calculated the price for four cables: 24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS, dual SATA, and 8-pin PCIe, and the cost was $99. You will probably need more cables than that.
Phanteks says that for those who can’t or don’t want to buy from Cablemod, there will be two cable kits for sale, with the PCIe Gen 5 kit for $79 and the complete kit for $179. That’s without a PSU.
The power supplies themselves have MSRPs of $199, $249, and $399 for 1,000-, 1,200-, and 1,600-watt units, respectively. The 1000 Watt and 1200 Watt units are offered in black or white, while the 1600 Watt unit is available in black only. All three will be released in August.
Do the math and the Revolt seems pretty expensive. Today, ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 compliant 1,000 watt power supplies are available from reputable companies like Corsair and MSI for under $200 and come with all cables included.
For an entry-level Revolt, it’ll cost you over $300 to get there (I’m not exactly sure how much Cablemod charges for the cheapest kit). However, the required cables are available.
