Microsoft released some Patch Tuesday fixes last November, but only today Admitted (opens in new tab) An error was occurring on Intel graphics hardware running DirectX or Direct3D applications. This issue was introduced in KB5019980 / KB5019961 for Windows 11 users and KB5019959 for Windows 10 users. neowinMicrosoft’s KB releases target known Windows quirks and wrinkles, but this isn’t the first time they’ve encountered their own issues.
Bugs in DirectX or Direct3D applications caused by Microsoft are described as intermittent. This may be one of the reasons why it has survived so long without even an official workaround. Microsoft states, “After installing KB5019980, Windows devices using Intel graphics driver versions 26.20.100.7463 through 30.0.101.1190 may encounter errors in apphelp.dll.” This issue can be intermittent and can affect apps that use DirectX or Direct3D to render some or all of their content.” is.
On the bright side, Microsoft has now acknowledged this apphelp.dll bug and says it will be resolved in an upcoming update, but there is a workaround that affected users can try.
Bugs in apphelp.dll that affect DirectX and Direct3D titles can usually be worked around by applying the latest Intel drivers, according to Microsoft. It recommends users to “Install Intel graphics driver version newer than 30.0.101.1190”. This driver was released in December 2021, so I’m sure Intel Arc Discrete Graphics users aren’t clinging to this outdated software. However, depending on the processor generation, some PCs may not offer new graphics drivers for the iGPU.
On the topic of Intel Graphics Drivers, we are happy to report the amazing progress that newcomers to the PC dGPU market have made in recent weeks/months. Last week, Intel released a new graphics driver that significantly boosts the performance of DX9.
