As many of you have noticed, AnandTech spent a few hours offline today. Still in recovery mode at the moment (site restored to his November 25th copy as of this writing).th), but now that our major recovery efforts are complete, we wanted to give you a quick update on AnandTech’s status.
Around 13:00 UTC (5:00 AM PT) today, AnandTech’s hosting provider’s onsite cloud storage was corrupted. As a result, AnandTech (and several other sites) went offline. Due to the nature of the corruption and the need to initiate restoration efforts as soon as possible, we chose to restore the site from offsite cold storage backups rather than relying on questionable onsite storage.
This is the first time I’ve had to run an offsite data recovery plan. Restoring the AT took a little longer than ideal, but in the end everything worked out, proving the need for an offsite backup.
We are working to restore content from the last few days. The article is back, but any comments or user registrations/updates to his account made after noon on Friday may be lost. sorry! And thank you for enduring with us during today’s outage.
