High-capacity M.2 SSD drives above 4 TB are always heavily priced, like the WD Black SN850X 4TB SSD launched at a price of $699, worth $0.17 per GB. Especially when it looks noticeably cheaper to buy multiple smaller drives to configure the same capacity. This is mostly true, the only major caveat is the amount of M.2 slots available on the motherboard and the performance of those slots.
now you WD Black SN850X 4TB for $379 on Newegg (opens in new tab), which brings the cents per gigabyte down to $0.09/GB. It’s still costly, and more expensive than two separate WD SN850X 2TB drives, but with one piece of hardware he’s paying extra for all 4TB capacity.

We reviewed the WD Black SN850X and were appropriately impressed with its excellent performance. Our test results show that the game ranks nearly at the top of his 3DMark test of his performance and is also very high on the transfer rate charts using Diskbench. The main negative at the time of review was the price, which thankfully has dropped to much more acceptable levels today.
